Tea Promoters India (TPI) promotes the produce of about 200 small farmers in the tea growing regions of Darjeeling, Dooars and Kerala, ensuring they get a fair price for their harvest, helping to create safe working conditions and provide a decent living wage. But TPI does so much more than market their product.
TPI runs a high school comprising of 350 students in a remote area of Darjeeling. In other regions it provides educational support in the form of scholarships and tuition classes across all its projects, and runs school buses for the families of small farmers.
Innovative micro credit loan schemes allow farmers to buy cows, as a result of which their children get extra nourishment from the milk, while workers and small farmers can sell their cow-dung to TPI-run small farmer projects to earn an additional income.
TPI has a focus on training for women. Its Mothers' Club project provides women with family planning advice and provides them with support through maternity, while TPI stipends have created job opportunities for women in nursing, midwifery etc.
Vocational training centres, clean drinking water systems, community centres and adequate housing have also been set up by TPI. Sports and cultural activities are organised to promote and foster community spirit and friendship.
TPI also notes:"Women have a special place in our programmes as they form the backbone of any tea garden. They now have the opportunity to play a more active role in the development process. The most important change brought into a worker's life is that they can now participate in the decision making process and management of the organisation."
I do enjoy your magazine - it provides a good balance to a lot of the right-wing / conservative and pro-big-business-dominated media.
It's an important publication and I'd love to spread the word about it.
