The international campaign to shut down the tar sands is shaping up to be an iconic battle. Issue #431 of the New Internationalist magazine argues that the Canadian tar sands project in Alberta is the most destructive project on earth. "The zealous pursuit of dirty oil is transforming Canada into a corrupt petro-state" writes Andrew Nikiforuk, in a piece headed Canada's curse.

NOTE: You pay for only one magazine. This trial subscription will start with the special issue on Tar Sands, plus you'll receive the following three issues free of charge, but there's no obligation to continue as a subscriber after that.
Along with the environmental damage, another poisonous legacy has been the impact on public policy. For example, Canada's environment minister has openly criticized provinces such as Quebec for implementing green policies that reduce fossil fuel consumption. Even worse, unlike Norway, Canada has no sovereign fund to ensure its oil wealth is invested in green future projects.

So what to do? Issue #431 of the New Internationalist has plenty of action suggestions, including the Ethical Consumer's Oil Sands Boycott.

Issue #431 of the New Internationalist magazine also includes:
- The fall of King Tuna. The future of the bluefin tuna hangs in the balance, but the fate of tuna stocks in general is a mirror of countless other species.
- A soldier's story. Gopal Mitra experienced the violence and tragedy of Kashmir firsthand, but is hopeful of a peaceful future.

If you take up this introductory trial subscription you'll receive:
