The New Internationalist is one of the most profound magazines.
The New Internationalist magazine is not being screwed or manipulated by any dominant ideological group or any dominant corporate interest. Therefore the New Internationalist editorial is genuinely the New Internationalist editorial.
The bad news is that giant 'life-science' corporations have been gobbling up the world market in seeds. The good news is that peasant farmers who save their own seeds can, and do, still feed the world.
NOTE: This completely free trial subscription will start with the special issue on Seed Savers, plus you'll receive the following three issues free of charge, and there's no obligation to continue as a subscriber after that. There are almost half a million known plant species, and still more to be discovered. Yet we now rely on just 15 to provide 90 per cent of our food crops.
Monoculture is risky
A billion peasant farmers around the world know well that monoculture in food crops is risky. They save a wide variety of heirloom seeds, and select the most appropriate for the weather conditions each year. The severe impact of climate change on agriculture - floods sweeping away planted fields and drought burning up crops - makes community seed saving even more urgent.
GM crops are no solution
Small-scale farmers in eastern Kenya who planted local maize varieties are reaping benefits, while those who opted for hybrids are counting losses.

Special feature on digital activism.
Issue #435 of the New Internationalist magazine also includes: A guide to digital activism. Thanks to the Web, it is now easier to subvert the traditional control structures that imposed limits on human expression, through building diverse and massive communities. But the effectiveness of building online audiences never obviates the need for the less glamorous work on the ground. Web activists cannot do the whole task; it still relies on civil society to turn information into active lobbying.
