The Oliver Mtukudzi Collection
The Tuku Years

The Oliver Mtukudzi Collection features some of the most enduring and appealing songs by this extraordinary artist from Zimbabwe. A legendary figure in contemporary African music, Oliver’s albums are consistent bestsellers in his native land, and his acclaimed releases on Putumayo have helped catapult him to international recognition as one of the African continent’s most important artists. A master songwriter with a gift for combining gripping melodies, captivating rhythms and potent lyrics, Oliver Mtukudzi uses music to entertain, heal and provoke listeners both at home and around the world.

Tuku, as he is known in his native Zimbabwe, sings of everyday life in a society plagued by social and political dilemmas. His lyrics also incorporate metaphors and folk tales, and carry powerful and meaningful messages that have helped his listeners address issues that far too often remain ignored or shielded from view. Outside of Southern Africa, Tuku has become recognized for his endearing stage presence and powerful performances alongside his band The Black Spirits. While the poetry of his lyrics goes unappreciated by those who do not speak one of the various languages he sings in, the strength of his melodies and the soul of his voice need no translation.

The tracks on The Oliver Mtukudzi Collection were selected from the powerful recordings of the "Tuku" years from 1998- 2002 when he joined forces with South African producer Steve Dyer to create a new and exciting sound that has been called "Tuku Music". It features several songs unavailable outside southern Africa along with two rare live tracks, including his performance of 'Hear Me Lord' which was recorded by Bonnie Raitt on her album 'Silver Lining'.
