GM Crops DVD
The truth about genetically modified crops and food in Australia
In mid-2007, the state governments in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia announced that reviews would be set up to consider lifting the moratoriums on the commercial production of GM crops in place in these states. Throughout Australia, this set alarm bells ringing amongst anti-GM campaigners as it meant that there was a very real possibility that, for the first time, GM food crops would be grown commercially, perhaps even as early as 2008.
On Saturday 1 September 2007, in a meeting held in Scots Church, Adelaide, two of the best-informed anti-GM activists, epidemiologist and biochemist Dr Judy Carman and National Spokesperson for the Network of Concerned Farmers, Julie Newman, gave detailed speeches outlining why the commercial production of GM food crops would be the biggest threat to food and agriculture Australia has ever faced.
This DVD is a record of the meeting held on 1 September. It shows the introduction given by Geoffrey Carracher, a broadacre farmer from Minimay, Victoria and then the speeches in full given by both Judy Carman and Julie Newman.
In her speech, Is GM Food Safe to Eat?, Judy Carman explains how poor Australias food safety assessments have been and how little research has been conducted into the long-term health risks of switching to GM food. There is an urgent need for long-term, independent investigations into the performance of GM crops in the field, she concludes, and until those are done, GM crops should not be commercially grown in Australia.
Julie Newmans speech, Economics and Industry Preparedness - the case for state moratoria on GM crops, focuses on legal and commercial implications of a possible introduction of GM crops. If Australians allow GM crops to be introduced, she concludes, both farmers and consumers will lose their freedom to choose and this must not be allowed to happen.
This DVD is essential viewing for students and activists, and anyone interested in the GM food debate.
