The SOFT Future Fund is a joint project of Environment Projects Australia and New Internationalist Publications Pty Ltd.
SOFT is for Sustainable, Organic & Fair Trade
Tread lightly; buy rightly.
By supporting this project you will help reduce the use of pesticides, particularly in the production of cotton and food. The World Health Organization estimates that globally at least three million people are poisoned by pesticides every year, and more than 200,000 die.
You'll also encourage the use of solar powered and wind-up torches and radios, instead of generating toxic waste with disposable batteries.
The promotion of fair trade in this project also boosts sustainability because fair trade products are made on a smaller scale, in harmony with the natural environment. Through fair trade, producer families also receive a stable income, enabling them to provide education for their children. History shows that education in poor countries leads to better family planning and empowering of women, which in turn reduces pressure on arable land, forests and the rural environment.
The New Internationalist is a non-profit social enterprise and is a registered Fair Trade Organization.
Please help by giving what you can to the SOFT Future Fund. If you'd like to donate more than $20, just press the Add to basket button several times. Donations are tax deductible.
The New Internationalist brings to life the people, the ideas and the action in the fight for global justice.
The New Internationalist magazine is not being screwed or manipulated by any dominant ideological group or any dominant corporate interest. Therefore the New Internationalist editorial is genuinely the New Internationalist editorial.
The New Internationalist magazine explains and clarifies all the confusions and contradictions we encounter daily in the media's international news coverage.
I have subscribed to New Internationalist for over 25 years, and can vouch for its fearless, high quality reporting of the real issues all over the world. And lovely items in their shop, too!
I've always been profoundly impressed by the quality of its research and its writing and how readily accessible it makes otherwise complex world affairs. Each of its ten annual editions is a short course in something profound.
A little about Asha Handicrafts: Asha Handicrafts provides the security of markets to small scale artisan workshops around India, like ANSA, the soapnut harvesters in Tamil Nadu.
New Internationalist Australia is a member of the World Fair Trade Organization, which means we have to stock a percentage of Fair Trade products, and also adhere to Fair Trade practices ourselves. Great for supporting producers rights, and also for our staff.
