On another front, the transition towns movement - which was already well underway before corporate globalization crashed - offers "engaged optimism" that looks for positive solutions. The movement started as an exploration of how communities could build local resilience and reduce their carbon emissions. The global financial crisis has triggered a new range of interest, particularly in local town currencies. The Brixton Pound, for example, is accepted in over 120 local shops.
