Dramatic changes in The Arctic...ICESat - NASA's survey satellite has revealed a dramatic thinning of Arctic sea ice between the winters of 2004 and 2008. Thin seasonal ice has replaced thick older ice as the dominant type for the first time on record.
Issue 424 of the New Internationalist magazine explains why trends such as this are such a concern, not just for the Arctic dwellers who depend on a stable environment for their survival, but also for its impact globally. The speed of the sea-ice thaw has shocked climate scientists.
The shrinking of the Greenland ice-sheet is of particular concern. If it goes unchecked, the calamitous release of greenhouse gases from the permafrost would result in a 1 to 1.5 metre rise in sea level, according to latest predictions.
Amazingly, some people still fail to understand the seriousness of the climate emergency. This magazine will help you argue the case with them.
