Artisan's Welfare Society

The lampshades are made by an NGO set up to enable employment of economically stretched villagers in a rural area in Tamil Nadu, India. The weavers and other producers form the membership of the artisans' societies, and it is from them that the societies officers are elected.

Production
Basically, the producers have a wooden frame around which is wound the cane that will form the eventual framework. The cotton fabric for the covering is specially handloom woven in the same society, and is cut to the shapes necessary to make the shade. These pieces of fabric are then glued to the canework frame. The frame is dismantled and removed and the wire support at the top is then attached to finish the lampshade. The lampshades are packed in a special bag, made in the society, which is a combination of cellulose film and brown paper.
