Stealing
a Nation DVD
Secrets of Diego Garcia uncovered
The story of Diego
Garcia is shocking, almost incredible. A British
colony lying in the middle of the Indian Ocean,
Diego Garcia is one of 64 unique coral islands
of the Chagos Archipelago, a phenomenon of natural
beauty, and once of peace.
All this began to end in 1961 when Diego Garcia
was marked as the site of, what is today, one
of America's largest military bases. At the behest
of the American government the British Foreign
Office set into action a plan to relocate the
islands inhabitants so that a formal lease between
the two countries could be signed.
Celebrated journalist John Pilger unearths a
powerful conspiracy and reveals the terrible
human cost paid by the natives of Diego Garcia
in the Chagos Islands as they were brutally removed
from their ancestral home, relocated against
their will or understanding and then victimised,
forced to live in abject poverty while the British
and American governments strengthened their economic
and military relationship.
Used to launch recent strikes against Iraq and
Afghanistan by the US, Diego Garcia is now occupied
by more than 4000 troops, a nuclear dump, a satellite
spy station, shopping malls, bars and a golf
course with anchorage for 30 warships. The Americans
call it Camp Justice! The Chagossians continue
to fight so that one day they may again call
it home.
'Stealing a Nation’ won
the Royal Television Society's top award as
Britain's best documentary
for 2004-5.
"John
Pilger is fearless. He unearths, with
steely attention to facts, the filthy
truth, and tells it as it is..."
