Sneakers
with Soul? No Sweat!
Sweatshops
exist from the western suburbs of
Melbourne & Sydney to the Free
Trade Zones of Asia. But now you
can walk down the street without
stepping on the worker who made your
shoes.
All No Sweat shoemakers are represented
by the Indonesian independent trade
union SPSI, TSK (Confederation of
Indonesian Employees Unions, Textile,
Clothing & Leather). The wage
figure for the lowest-paid worker
at the union shop that produces No
Sweat sneakers is 785,000 rupiah
a month, or about AUD$130, including
shift allowances and holiday bonuses.
This is 20% higher than the regional
minimum wage, even before the considerable
rice allowance is added. All workers
receive extra money to purchase rice,
which is based upon family size.
All employees also receive 100% health
insurance (and 80% for family members),
travel allowances, maternity and
other benefits not calculated into
the wage figure. In addition to these
benefits, after 25 years, workers
receive a pension worth 10% of their
lifetime earnings.
On top of this, a percentage of
each sale helps fund social justice
campaigns around the world including
the Anti-Slavery Association of Australia.
Each pair of No Sweat sneakers comes
with a comprehensive labor content
disclosure form which provides you
with complete information about the
wages and benefits of the union workers
who produced your shoes. We challenge
the rest of the sneaker industry
to do the same. In fact, we dare
them to!
