Midnight
in Mali
Mali's finest musicians interacting in
a once-in-a-lifetime formation
Several of the musicians
on Midnight in Mali are famous worldwide and have
studio albums, available internationally. But
- as this CD shows - they are much more playful
captured in a less-formal, 'live' concert, at
night, in Mali.
Players include Djélimady
Tounkara, who many regard as Africa's greatest
guitarist, bala master Kélètigui Diabate, singers
Samba Sissoko and Diénéba Seck, virtuosi of various
lutes and percussion and singer-guitarist Habib
Koité, the evening's musical director.
From delicately intimate
duets to rampantly exuberant large band sets,
the album is a gem which sparkles the more brightly
for not having been polished too much.
It was that rare occasion
when musical giants dare to risk the new, rely
on on their wits, and freely explore their shared
heritage: the majestic, matchless variety of Malian
music.
"..comprised
of moments every bit as spine-tingling as the
whole that they add up to. The talents of the
participants are spot on, the intimacy of the
live sound is nearly perfect and each selection
is a jewel."
